Substance abuse often occurs concurrently with mental health issues, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, personality disorders, and ADD/ADHD. According to the National Library of Medicine, “About half of people with a mental disorder will also have a substance use disorder at some point in their lives and vice versa. The interactions of the two conditions can worsen both.”
For people in addiction recovery, understanding the role mental health plays in their substance abuse is critical. To that end, the New Origins team includes a number of counselors and therapists who specialize in co-occurring disorders. We combine customized treatment plans with the compassionate support and attention necessary for successful outcomes.

My name is Ron and I am an addict in long term recovery. My journey started 3/3/09 when I realized I could no longer go on merely existing. I am no stranger to the pain, isolation, misery, hopelessness and debauchery of active addiction. There is truly no reason that I should be here, no longer questioning why I am, I now question what can I do to make a difference to those who still suffer. When I first started in the field as support staff I knew I found my purpose. As I approached the completion of my Masters Program in Psychology the next indicated step to making that difference was to start something new, something different. New Origins was that vision, that hope, that difference I was seeking. As with everything my vision expanded and the introduction of Into the Light followed as a means of addressing the mental health needs that became impossible to ignore. As a person who also understands the potential depths and darkness of mental health, I had to do something. I show up each and every day with that same goal I had at day 1, to bring hope, bring change, and bring light to an otherwise dark existence. Every journey may look a little different but I will be there to walk alongside in support hoping to inspire and motivate the very change I have come to know and appreciate.
My name is Ashley and I became a therapist because I knew I wanted to help others to become their best selves. As an intern I first started working in an Addiction and Co-Occurring Disorders facility and immediately felt I found my calling and felt a deep sense of passion and motivation to help as many men as I could walk into recovery and live a life they’re proud of. Upon licensure starting New Origins was the greatest impact in this journey I could make to help. Creating a safe therapeutic environment to challenge and encourage others in their journey, baring witness to the change of suffering to health and wellness and knowing personally and through supervising other clinicians we are lifting the depths hidden under addictions and co-occurring disorders and embarking into a new beginning and authentic life is my dreams coming true everyday. Into the Light organically became the next indicated step to continue this journey to expand the helping hands to untangle the complexity of primary mental health. Maria brings empathy and compassion with an easy-going style of communication, helping patients to feel at ease and comfortable. She gives patients ongoing care and follow-ups paying special attention to the patient’s individual needs. She is an active listener and advocates for her patients. Maria strives to understand her patients to better meet their needs and has continued her education in completing alcohol and drug studies, becoming a certified counselor. What helps her understand her patients best is her intimate knowledge of the disease of addiction and the battle she has fought to overcome it.
Sophia Broderick is an Acceptance and Commitment therapist who specializes in co-occurring disorders, trauma, sexuality, gender identity issues and family work. Sophia earned her bachelor’s degree in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies and her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Redlands. Sophia is trained in EMDR, and is a certified clinical trauma professional. Sophia’s aim is to guide clients to be present with what life brings and to move in a direction that has personal meaning. Sophia’s approach to the therapeutic environment is to provide a space of no judgement and rigorous compassion in order for her clients to heal and grow. It is an honor for Sophia to serve the clients of New Origins and witness their transformations.
My name is Alfredo Lopez, and I myself am a grateful recovering addict. After having spent many years lost in a hole of darkness and insanity, detached from society, I was given a second chance in life. This new way of life is truly a miracle from God through the most loving and caring people of New Origins.
My personal transformation being proof, has inspired me to make the same happen to others suffering with the disease of addiction. I have taken the necessary steps to start my career as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor and will delightfully continue my journey with New Origins. Utilizing my skills and knowledge, I will provide the care and support for our patients as well as the life skills necessary to cope with a new way of life
I have experienced life in addiction and I live life in recovery. I have been given the gift of desperation to find life in my sobriety. I am able to provide my children with the father they deserve. I am able to be present for my loved ones in my life. I have found that life works best when we share it with others and I am happy to be a part of the family at New Origins. I have found a home here and I hope many more come to know and love this place as I have done. My experience was not only did I find treatment but I found a family who was there for me every step of the journey. I don’t believe we are just a treatment center, but a home for people to come and learn to trust, love, grow, and find the life they deserve. I know for me getting clean was one of the scariest things I have done in life, however, I do not think I could have found a better place.
As a child of an active addict, Kory Murrin was exposed to a lifestyle of chaos and instability. As an adolescent, he would soon begin living a similar lifestyle filled with drugs, crime, and violence. As an adult, Kory witnessed God’s amazing grace in his mother’s life and in his own life. Now the proud son of a mother in recovery for 27 years and a man qualified to empathize, encourage, and serve, Kory looks to support individuals fighting in the journey of life.

Hello, my name is Richard. I am an addict in recovery. I was stuck in active addiction for over 15 years. All I knew since adolescence was addiction and the lifestyle surrounding addiction. It seemed all I had to look forward to was jails, institutions, and death. Through the grace of God I was brought to recovery and was taught a new way to live. Since then, I have dedicated my life to help those suffering from the disease of addiction. I have worked in the field of addiction treatment for over 11 years and I am grateful for the miracles that have taken place in my life. I strive to be a better professional and better person in recovery.
Cody Gregg is an addict in recovery and an alumnus of the Into the Light/New Origins’ program. Cody struggled with addiction to multiple substances and experienced multiple failed attempts before finally surrendering completely and finding success. Through his surrender and with the help of the staff at New Origins, Cody was able to learn a different way of life, and today, he finds true and pure happiness in being able to give back what was given to him and show others struggling with substance abuse that there is a different way to live.
Hi, my name is Larry, and I’m an addict/alcoholic my sobriety date is 7/19/2010. I have an amazing wife and five kids I almost lost in my addiction, but recovery saved it, and life is beautiful. Today I have a completely different life; I live a life of giving back what was given to me. Working in treatment has allowed me to give others the same chance at a new way of life, and I love watching the clients grow; my hobbies are cars, fishing, and football.
This man needs no introduction, a living legend in skateboarding has now dedicated himself to being a beacon of hope for the still suffering addict and alcoholic. As an alumnus of the program Andy began his journey to recovery February 13, 2020 when he decided to apply his rip ride or die attitude to getting clean and staying clean. Andy brings life and excitement wherever he goes, nobody does it like he does. Sean Jerome has been working to help those who struggle with addiction and mental health for the last 10 years. He has worked in many different capacities over the years giving him experience and insight. Sean has found his calling in admissions and outreach because he is great at empathizing with those who are in a state of crisis or contemplation. He has personally dealt with family members who struggled with addiction and mental health. Sean spent years growing up in group homes and foster homes as a result of drugs and alcohol in the family. This is why Sean started working with troubled teens then later became a drug and alcohol counselor. He has a huge passion for helping those in need as well as helping the families of those in need.
