One reason kratom can become highly addictive is 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a naturally occurring alkaloid that binds to opioid receptors. Today, some of the strongest kratom products, including concentrated extracts, kratom gummies, 7-OH tablets, and other enhanced products, contain elevated levels of 7-OH, increasing the risk of dependence and addiction. Some products may also contain compounds such as pseudoindoxyl kratom derivatives, which may further increase potency and the risk of misuse.
Because of growing public health concerns surrounding these highly concentrated products, the DEA announced in July 2026 its intent to temporarily place 7-hydroxymitragynine above a specified concentration threshold into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. In August 2026, it temporarily scheduled three related compounds: mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and MGM-16. While traditional botanical kratom leaf is not included in these actions, many products marketed as “kratom” today derive much of their potency from concentrated 7-OH. The federal process for 7-OH itself is still ongoing. In California, the Department of Public Health has already declared kratom and 7-OH products illegal to manufacture or sell for consumption, effective October 24, 2025.
